About Rajasthan

India's Most Magnificent Kingdom

"Rajasthan is not merely a destination — it is a living museum of India's royal past, desert grandeur, and centuries-old craftsmanship."

Rajasthan — the Land of Kings — is India's largest state by area and one of its most visually spectacular. Stretching across 342,239 km² of northwestern India, it is where the vast Thar Desert meets the ancient Aravalli hill ranges, where centuries-old forts crown dramatic skylines, and where Rajput hospitality is as legendary as the heroism of its history.

A Rajasthan tour is unlike anywhere else in the world. Walk through the pink sandstone alleys of Jaipur, India's first planned city. Drift on a shikara across the mirror-calm waters of Lake Pichola in Udaipur — the "Venice of the East." Stand beneath the colossal walls of Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, one of India's largest forts. Watch the sun sink into the golden dunes of the Thar Desert near Jaisalmer.

Beyond the architecture, Rajasthan delivers a full sensory journey: the aroma of dal baati churma, the thunder of folk dhol drums at festivals, the flash of mirror-embroidered textiles in bazaars, and the electric thrill of spotting a Royal Bengal Tiger in Ranthambore's ancient forests.

The Royal Past

History of Rajasthan

Ten centuries of valor, sacrifice, and architectural brilliance — the history that makes Rajasthan tours so deeply moving.

Rajasthan's history is among the most dramatic in the Indian subcontinent. The Rajput clans — Chauhans, Sisodias, Rathores, and Kachwahas — rose to prominence from the 9th century AD, carving kingdoms from the Thar Desert and Aravalli hills through military genius and fierce cultural pride. Their courts became crucibles of art, poetry, and architecture that still dazzle visitors today.

Legendary rulers like Maharana Pratap of Mewar and Prithviraj Chauhan played a defining role in Indian history — their defiance against Mughal and foreign invasions remains a cornerstone of national identity. The Mughal period simultaneously produced some of Rajasthan's greatest architecture: the fusion of Rajput and Mughal styles is visible in the layered grandeur of Amber Fort, Jaipur's City Palace, and countless havelis across the state.

On 30 March 1949, 18 princely states, two chieftainships, and one British-administered territory merged to form the present State of Rajasthan — celebrated each year as Rajasthan Day. Today, it preserves this royal legacy in over 30 major forts and hundreds of palaces, many now open as heritage hotels and museums welcoming visitors from around the world.

Traveller FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions — Rajasthan Tours

Everything you need to know before booking your Rajasthan trip, answered by our travel experts.

What is the best time to visit Rajasthan?

October to March is the ideal time for Rajasthan tours, with comfortable temperatures of 10–28°C — perfect for sightseeing, desert safaris, and outdoor activities. This window covers the Pushkar Camel Fair (November), Desert Festival Jaisalmer (February), Jaipur Literature Festival (January), and Gangaur & Mewar Festivals (March). December and January are the most popular months — book early.

July to September (monsoon) is best for Udaipur and Mount Abu when the Aravallis turn beautifully green. April to June is extremely hot in the plains (40–48°C) but ideal for Mount Abu.

How many days are ideal for a Rajasthan tour?

For the major highlights — Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Udaipur — plan for 10–12 days. Add 2 days each for Pushkar, Ranthambore, or Bikaner. The Golden Triangle + Jaipur quick tour works in 5–7 days. We recommend a minimum of 10 days for first-time visitors to experience Rajasthan without rushing from city to city.

What are the best places to visit in Rajasthan?

The top places to visit in Rajasthan are: Jaipur (Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar), Udaipur (Lake Pichola, City Palace), Jodhpur (Mehrangarh Fort, Umaid Bhawan), Jaisalmer (Golden Fort, Sam Dunes), Pushkar (Brahma Temple, Sacred Lake), Ranthambore (Tiger Safari), Mount Abu (Dilwara Temples), Bikaner (Junagarh Fort), and Chittorgarh (UNESCO Fort Complex).

How many UNESCO World Heritage Sites are in Rajasthan?

Rajasthan has 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites within the Hill Forts of Rajasthan designation (2013): Amber Fort (Jaipur), Chittorgarh Fort, Kumbhalgarh Fort, Ranthambore Fort, Gagron Fort, and Jaisalmer Fort. Additionally, Jantar Mantar, Jaipur (2010) and the Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur (1985) are individually inscribed UNESCO sites.

Is Rajasthan safe for solo and female travellers?

Rajasthan is generally one of India's safer tourism states. Major tourist cities — Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur — have dedicated tourist police and strong infrastructure. Recommended precautions: stay in well-reviewed hotels, use pre-booked transport, dress modestly at religious and rural sites, and avoid isolated areas at night. Countless solo female travellers visit Rajasthan every year with highly positive experiences.

What is the famous food to eat in Rajasthan?

Must-try Rajasthani dishes: Dal Baati Churma (the state dish — lentils, baked wheat balls, sweet churma with ghee), Laal Maas (fiery mutton curry), Pyaaz Kachori (crispy onion pastry from Jaipur), Ghewar (festival sweet), Ker Sangri (desert vegetable preparation), and Gatte ki Sabzi (chickpea flour dumplings in yogurt gravy). Most Rajasthani restaurants offer excellent vegetarian thalis.

What is the best way to travel within Rajasthan?

The most comfortable option is a private car with a local driver — ideal for flexibility, photo stops, and reaching off-road forts and villages between cities. Trains work well for longer sectors (Delhi–Jaipur, Jodhpur–Jaisalmer). For a luxury splurge, the Palace on Wheels train completes a full Rajasthan circuit in 7 nights. RSRTC Volvo buses are a reliable budget option between major cities.
