History of Red Fort

The Red Fort was built by none other than Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. He intended it to serve as the palace fortress for his new capital, Shahjahanabad. He decided to move his capital to Delhi from Agra and promptly commissioned the fort's construction by the Yamuna River. Work began in 1638 and took over eight years to complete. The structure was originally named Qila-i-Mubarak, which means 'the Blessed Fort'. Throughout its history of over three centuries, the fort saw many occupants, including Aurangzeb, Jahandar Shah, Muhammad Shah, and Bahadur Shah II, among others.

A key attraction at the fort is the light and sound show held in the evenings. Touted as one of the best light and sound shows in India, the Red Fort's presentation guides you through the monument's history in a captivating and visually appealing way. The show concludes with a brief speech by Jawaharlal Nehru. You can book the show online or purchase tickets from the stalls right at the fort.

How to Reach Red Fort

  • By Air

    Delhi connects to most major cities in India and abroad via air transport. Indira Gandhi International Airport is situated at Palam, a spot 16km away from Delhi. Both domestic and international flights land here, with separate terminals for each.


  • By Rail

    Delhi is connected to practically all parts of India by rail, with the exception of Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. There are numerous railway stations in Delhi from where many trains either start, end, or have a stoppage. The main railway stations in Delhi include: New Delhi, Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Delhi Sarai Rohilla, Delhi Cantt, and Delhi Safdarjung.


  • By Road

    Delhi is connected to many cities by road transport. Visitors can catch buses from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, ISBT Anand Vihar, and ISBT at Sarai Kale Khan. From these terminals, you can find buses for Kanpur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Udaipur, Agra, and many other cities. Both AC and non-AC buses run from these terminals, and some long-distance buses also offer sleeper coaches.


  • Local Transportation

    Visitors can visit Red Fort through different methods of neighborhood transport. They can utilize auto rickshaws, cabs, and neighborhood transports to arrive at the fortress. Metro prepares likewise keep running in the city and the closest metro station to the fortification is Chandni Chowk on Yellow Line which is 1.5km away from the red post.
